Although a rainy and cold morning did not promise good times, Grade 8 students started their exploration journey through central Šumadija, following the steps of courageous Serbian soldiers.
We started the tour with the visit of St George’s Church in Oplenac. We had an interesting lecture about the history and construction of this magnificent endowment by the Karađorđević family. Then we visited the house where Petar I Karađorđević lived and which is now a museum where there is the original telegram announcing the declaration of war to Serbia in 1914 by Austro-Hungary. There is also the royal family portrait collection. Within the Oplenac complex there is Karađorđe’s Church and Karađorđe’s Tower which holds the famous cannon “aberdar” whose handle was used to cast the base of the royal family’s crown.
In Aranđelovac, we had a break, took a walk around the beautiful park and had refreshments in a nearby restaurant. The sunny skies and fresh breeze tempted us to continue towards Orašac and Marićevića Gully where the first Serbian rebels started the final battle against the Turks.
We finished the day enjoying free activities, walks, sports and talking with friends.
