FORGOTTEN SERBIAN INTELLECTUALS

FORGOTTEN SERBIAN INTELLECTUALS

On Wednesday, December 2nd 2015, Danica Gaković held the second lecture as part of the project Forgotten Serbian Intellectuals, which was initiated by the school parliament.

Vasa Pelagić lived in the 19th century, he was a teacher, writer, traveller, magazine editor, supporter of the socialist movement and archimandrite (he renounced the church and was later laicized). He greatly influenced the working class and farmers of the Balkans. In our country he is known for his People’s Primer, which can be found even today in many homes. Parts of this book were presented by Danica who talked about the healing properties of St. John's wort, strawberries, healing a snake bite, and many other practical advice. At the end of the class we discussed the translation of foreign words and phrases for which Pelagić advocated to be added to the dictionary of Serbian language. Some of those words are still in use today. A second grade student, Anđela Lolić, distinguished herself with translation.

We are looking forward to the next Forgotten Serbian Intellectuals lesson.
