Epic heroes seen as guardians of moral and national identity

MYP students,grade 9, participated in a thematic class, Epic heroes. The class started with the story of Achilles, the greatest hero of the ancient Greece. We compared him to Marko Kraljevic and Milos Obilic. The lecture continued with the story behind the phrase Deus ex machina, finding the solution to Gods interference, Homer and serbian epic poetry. Katarina Urosevic, Serbian language teacher, talked about great importance of certain horses in serbian epic poetry: Djogin, Jabucilo, Zdralin, Strina, Kuslja, Sarac and Zelenko. Our Russian language teacher, Lana Novkovic, gave an interesting presentation about the main character of a russian novel“A word about Igorev“. We also talked about some contemporary russian heroes: Uljin, Rasputin, Merzost, mihail Rasputin...Our spanish teacher Suzana Amanovic compared two spanish heroes, El Sid and Mark. Gordana Djordjevic, German teacher presented german epic heroes, Zigfrid, Brunhilda, Krimhilda...and last but not least, there was a talk about english epic poem Beowulf. Beowulf was „strong, courageous, he always stood by word, no matter the cost“.
