Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic

Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic

Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic is one of the most famous personalities of our culture. His work on the reform of the alphabet, the effort to introduce the national language into literature and culture, the hard work on collecting, classifying and publishing the corps of folk literature, the vividness of his narrative gift - have permanently marked our culture. This year we celebrate 200 years of our alphabet and we can (not) modestly say that from the beginning of the year we have been celebrating this jubilee in our Serbian language and literature lessons, even before many cultural institutions in our country. As early as February, at their design lessons, our grade 9 students worked on the alphabet and we proudly show their work.

On 18 April 2018 our guest was Aleksandar Milanovic, professor of language history from the Faculty of Philology. His review of the history of the alphabet was extremely interesting to students of the 9th grade. The names of students were written in letters used in different periods of Serbian written culture. The students were given a comprehensive picture of the difference between the alphabet of Vuk and the earlier versions of the Serbian Cyrillic letters. It is important to know that the Serbian people are not the only who celebrate the jubilee of the alphabet and the publication of the first edition of the "Serbian Dictionary", but also the entire Slavic world. Professor Milanovic praised the knowledge of the history of the language of our students.
