Early in the morning on 28th September our first year students and their teachers were waiting for their flight to Rome at “Nikola Tesla” airport. At the very beginning of our six-day excursion a long walk took us around the capital city and we saw a number of landmarks: the city square – Wenceslas Square, the Gunpowder Tower, the City Hall, the medieval astronomical clock, Charles Bridge, the Old City Hall, the National Museum, Kafka’s House, Jewish Quarter, Paris Street, we heard about the controversial contemporary artist David Černy and saw his unusual monuments. The most interesting being the rotating sculpture/installation of Franz Kafka. We spent a fabulous afternoon cruising on the Vltava River where we had a break and enjoyed the view of the Golden City. We visited the luxurious spa, Karlovy Vary famous for its hot springs and architecture. We were speechless after visiting the Gothic Karlstejn Castle founded by Charles IV, where we were reminded of Czech history as well as Dresden, a city that was completely destroyed in 1945 and then rebuilt again. We can say that we had a great time on our first high school excursion, that we had great weather along the way and that we made new friends and strengthened the old frienships.
